Pay Per Head Preview: The Road To The Kentucky Derby

Apr 13, 2017 | Horse Racing

The final two Kentucky Derby Prep races are this Saturday, April 15. The Grade 1 Arkansas Derby and the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes are the final chances for many trainers to get a horse into the starting gate on the First Saturday in May.

Per head agents can find out what horses should provide the most action in each race. They can also find some ways on how to manage action from both races.

Grade 1 Arkansas Derby

Favorites

8/5 Classic Empire
2/1 Malagacy

There’s a good chance that Malagacy goes off as the favorite in this race. The Todd Pletcher trained son of Shackleford shouldn’t be able to run long.

But, Malagacy won the Rebel Stakes, the local prep for the Arkansas Derby. Plus, his main rival, Classic Empire, goes into the Arkansas Derby off an injury.

Agents might take some action on a long shot. But, almost all exotic wagers in the online racebook should center around either Classic Empire or Malagacy.

Grade 3 Lexington Stakes

No Dozing
West Coast

No Dozing ran a terrific second to Mo Town in the Grade 1 Remesen last November. Since then, the Arnaud Delacour trainee hasn’t run well in 2 straight Kentucky Derby prep races. This is No Dozing’s last chance to stamp his ticket to the Kentucky Derby on May 6.

It’s doubtful that No Dozing goes off the favorite because Bob Baffert has one last bullet in his arsenal to get to the Kentucky Derby this year.

West Coast, sired by Flatter and out of an Honour and Glory broodmare, Caressing, has the goods to be the newest three-year-old star in Bob Baffert’s barn.

West Coast could end up an 8/5 favorite in the Lexington on Saturday. Another horse that should garner plenty of action in per head agent online racebooks is the Steve Asmussen trained Resiliency.

How Pay Per Head Agents Can Manage Horse Racing Wagers

Managing horse racing wagers isn’t the same as managing sports wagers. Agents must understand that horseplayers can make a lot of money with a small investment. There are two things that agents should do regarding Kentucky Derby prep races.

First, agents must set a max betting win limit on the race. All online racebooks, even those not run by PPH agents, set max betting win limits on races.

So, for example, you could set the max betting win limit on the Arkansas Derby at $5,000. That’s the max amount of money that any player can win on all racebook wager types that include the Arkansas Derby.

Second, agents should set max betting limits on horses to win. To understand why this is important, one just needs to look at the odds. If Malagacy holds at 2 to 1, he pays $6 for every $2 bet to win. If someone put $1,000 on Malagacy and he were to win at 2 to 1, the payout is $3,000.

$200 sounds like a good amount to allow on a horse to win one of the two Kentucky Derby prep races this Saturday.
